Pygmy Pine Branch in a Blanket of Snow

On the Pygmy Pine Plains, a heavy snow falls and is borne by the thick tangle of twisted tree branches. A single perfect pine cone sleeps in a blanket of silence.

Pygmy pines are either their own species, or a form of stunted Pitch Pine. Found in Burlington and Ocean Counties, almost exclusively in the world, in the New Jersey Pinelands. Pygmy Pine cones need the heat of a forest fire to release their seeds. The Pygmy Pine Plains are fire prone and a prime example of fire ecology.
