Spring and the Pygmy Pine

Beautiful coloration highlighted by the harsh light after a thunderstorm, the start of a new season of growth.
Pygmy pines are either their own species, or a form of stunted Pitch Pine. Found in Burlington and Ocean Counties, almost exclusively in the world, in the New Jersey Pinelands. Pygmy Pine cones need the heat of a forest fire to release their seeds. The Pygmy Pine Plains are fire prone and a prime example of fire ecology.
